Identification keys for Auchenorrhyncha in BritainThere are a number of identification keys covering all or a majority of the British Auchenorrhyncha fauna. The standard works are the four Royal Entomological Society (RES) handbooks by Walter Le Quesne. Numerous species have been added since these were published and the Fulgoromorpha (planthoppers), which were dealt with in the first part to appear, have since undergone substantial nomenclatural changes (given in the checklist included at the end of Part 2c). The starting key that separates the two super-families (Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromorpha) is found in part 2(a), with keys to the constituent families appearing in parts 2(a) and 2(3) respectively. All four are now out of print, although it is usually fairly easy to find copies on the second-hand market. As of 2012, all four of these handbooks can be downloaded from the RES website.Of the continental works published in recent years, Biedermann & Niedringhaus (originally published in German in 2004 and then as an English translation in 2009) is undoubtedly the most useful for workers in Britain. Nearly all of the British fauna is covered, with the general exception of some rare upland species found in northern Britain. Several smaller publications now accompany this major work, including a superbly illustrated photographic atlas (Kunz et al. 2011) which contains over 1500 photos and has an introduction in English, as well as a corresponding key to nymphs (Stockmann et al. 2013). More recently, Wilson et al. (2015) have covered the 19 British species which are omitted, providing keys to all families and genera in Britain and Ireland and including a comprehensive British checklist. Two other continental series are particularly useful. The Faune de France series (in French) includes most species found in Britain, but does not cover the Fulgoromorpha at all (future volume currently being prepared by William della Giustina). The Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica series (in English) covers most but not all of the species occurring in Britain and includes several that do not occur here. All are in print, except the two volumes by Ribaut which are moderately easy to obtain on the second-hand market. Holzinger et al. (2003) is the first volume in what is planned to be a 3-volume series covering the mid-European fauna. Again, there is nearly full coverage of the species that occur in Britain within the Fulgoromorpha and the non-Cicadellid Cicadomorpha. Helpfully, the text is bilingual with pages split vertically between German and English. Remane & Wachman (1993) is essentially a photographic guide, with photos of some 180 species, most of which occur in Britain. ROYAL ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY HANDBOOKS: LE QUESNE, W.J.
